Aid Stations
There are 9 staffed aid stations along the course passed through 21 times. There are also 3 unstaffed aid stations passed through 6 times. Each will have a mileage sign that will tell you how far you have come and how far it is to the next aid station. At the 31.4, 62.9 and 85.9 mile aid stations we will be enforcing cut-off times. The only cut-off which is flexible is the 85.9 cut-off at Hwy 12 on the way back to the finish. If you have a pacer at this point in the race you may continue with the understanding that other aid stations will be shutting down at their assigned times. Each aid station has a suggested maximum pace time which you should not fall behind if you intend to finish in under 30 hours.
The aid station volunteers are there to help you. Make sure you are checked in at each aid station (have your number visible), for they will record your number and time into the station. Limited first aid will be available at the stations as well as bug repellent.
The staffed aid stations will have the following food and drink:
Water, Ice
Energy Drink
Coke, Mt. Dew, Sprite
Pretzels, Crackers, Cookies, Chips
Peanut Butter, Jelly and Turkey sandwiches
Fruit
Boiled white potatoes
Other assortment of sweet and salty foods
Some stations will have coffee, soup and other assorted food for runners and pacers. Remember: If you carry a cup or bowl out of an aid station please carry it to the next station. Ice will be typically be available at staffed aid stations.
Drop Bags
At the morning check-in you will be given the opportunity to leave 4 drop bags which will be transported to the appropriate aid stations listed below (see drop bag suggestions). Write your name, number and drop bag location onto each bag. Bags will be returned as quickly as possible, but can not be guaranteed to be returned to the finish area until the respective aid station closes. Each Drop Bag aid station will have a "Bag Done" tarp so we know which bag to return to the finish line.
These locations will give you access to your bag at the following mileages:
Bag #1: Miles 15.5 and 47.3 Emma Carlin
Bag #2: Mile 31.4 Scuppernong 3:00pm Sat. cutoff
Bag #3: Miles 0, 62.9 and 100.2 Nordic midnight Sat. cutoff (for 100km)
noon Sun. cutoff (for 100 mile)
Bag #4: Miles 77.1 and 85.9 Hwy 12 8:30am Sun. cutoff at 85.9 miles
Of course you will have the option of having a crew follow you from station to station. Crew can only assist you at the official aid station points. This is for traffic reasons as well as fairness to all in receiving aid. Those unfairly receiving aid outside of the staffed aid stations may be disqualified.
The table below tells you the station location, number, opening and closing times, type of access and/or aid, as well as cutoff times.
